After celebrating her 30th birthday last month, Kristen Bell is all about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Appearing on dual covers for the September issue of Shape, the stylish actress shares her 30 best stay-fit tips, challenging women to embrace a more balanced approach to fitness. Opting for an active lifestyle over fad diets, she admits: “I’m like a jackrabbit throughout the day and like to keep moving whenever I can.” Instead of depriving herself of caloric sweets, she makes compromises. “More flights of stairs means I can eat more candy!” And when Bell isn’t playing board games with financé Dax Shepard, she can be found planting vegetables in her organic garden or getting crafty at home. “I love to do projects around the house,” she explains. “I have a very old sewing machine, and if I spot something I like in a magazine, I want to see if I can make it.” To hear more from Kristen, pick up the September issue of Shape or visit Shape.com for a behind the scenes look at her cover shoot. Here’s some fitness ideas from the 30-year-old Burlesque actress:

On how she stays active: “My friends and I are all into staying in shape through outdoor activities. We play Ultimate Frisbee, hike the trails around Los Angeles, go rock climbing in Malibu, explore underwater caves in Palos Verdes. We’re gluttons for excitement, and it keeps us fit!”

On cheating on her diet every so often: “I’ve learned I don’t really feel well after I eat it but I also know that devouring a whole cheesecake with my girlfriends can feel incredible! I’m always going to be the kind of person who treats myself.” (K-Bell has been a vegetarian for 19 years.)

On reaping what she sows: “Now that I have all this fresh mint growing in my garden, I make mint lemonade slushies. I start by squeezing fresh lemon juice into a blender, then add chopped mint, a little agave nectar to neutralize the sour, and a lot of ice. Delicious, healthy, and refreshing!”

With Bell on board, Evan Greenberg, who wrote the script and is directing, and producers Daniel Dubiecki and Joel Michaely are now focusing on their a nationwide casting search for a young actress to play a precocious 10- to 12-year old.

“We’re looking to discover an unknown,” said Greenberg, adding he hopes to go down the route of movies such as “Billy Elliot” and “Little Miss Sunshine,” both of which uncovered talented youngsters (“Elliot” was the screen debut of 13-year-old Jamie Bell, while “Sunshine” made a movie star of 10-year-old Abigail Breslin, who had only worked in TV).

Kristen Bell, who credits her love of dogs for the reason she has been a vegetarian since the age of 11, has launched a new project to benefit the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the organization’s efforts to take care of rescued animals with special needs.

Bell is dedicating the project to her Labrador named Sadie who was recovered from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. The actress explains that when she first met Sadie, the 11-year-old pooch was in bad shape with missing teeth and in need of surgery. Bell writes, “What I loved so much about Sadie was that – through it all – the pain, the loss she’d just experienced, the uncertainty of what was next, she was just this total loveball. I saw that all this dog needed was a place to hang her hat. And I was going to give it to her.”

The 30-year-old is using actor Edward Norton’s Crowdrise—a social networking and crowdsourcing platform—to raise the funds for HSUS. The money raised will be earmarked for special needs pets at HSUS shelter partners.
