Win a “Totally Platonic” Date With Kristen Bell

posted on Jul 2 · by Jennifer · No Comments · Charity, News, Videos

Squee! Kristen Bell is asking “ladies and gentlemen, marshmallows, my fellow Americans” to come to her aid again, and if you do, you could win a date — for real! — with the actress.

In this endearingly goofy video shared exclusively with Us, the 32-year-old star explains her latest plea for funding: “There are two things I really care about: the Veronica Mars movie getting made and changing the world. You guys are already getting the Veronica Mars movie getting made. Well played. Now I want you to change the world with me,” she pleas. (Fans raised $5.7 million via Kickstarter earlier this year to help finance the TV-show-inspired film, which is already in production in L.A.)

Bell is asking fans to donate this time to Invisible Children, “a charity that’s so near and dear to my heart”; the organization aims to stop Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army from abducting children and killing civilians in East and Central Africa.

When you donate to her cause at prizeo.com/kristen this month, you also enter to win a date with the actress. “Not my date like we’re going to hook up, but my date like we’ll sit at the table together. Maybe we’ll hold hands. I don’t know. We’ll see how the night goes,” she helpfully clarifies.

Her plans with the winner? A date to a human rights conference in August thrown by Invisible Children. “We’re going to eat, we’re going to dance, we’re going to get our minds blown together.”

Along for the evening will be other stars like Rachel Bilson, Sophia Bush, Veronica Mars’ Ryan Hansen, who makes an adorable cameo in the video. Fiance Dax Shepard and their 3-month-old daughter, Lincoln, unfortunately, do not appear in the clip, but their dog does!

Kristen Bell In “Demand a Plan” PSA

posted on Dec 21 · by Jennifer · No Comments · Charity, News, Videos

On the same day the National Rifle Association demanded access to guns be protected, a bevy of celebrities released a PSA urging lawmakers to put forth a substantive plan for increasing gun control.

Among the entertainers making appearances in the one-and-a-half minute ad for Demand a Plan are Jamie Foxx, Jason Bateman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Carey Mulligan, Beyonce, Jeremy Renner, Amy Poehler, Jessica Alba, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, John Legend, Nick Offerman, John Slattery, Selana Gomez, Jennifer Aniston, Jon Hamm, Chris Rock and Conan O’Brien.

As with many celebrity PSAs, each person says a few words that, taken as a whole, create a moving call to action. This particular video begins with the celebrities listing mass shootings, from Columbine to Virginia Tech.

On Dec. 19, a number of celebrities and media figures took out a full-page ad in the New York Times, demanding action on gun control. The advertisement was signed by the likes of Lady Gaga and HuffPost’s own Arianna Huffington.

A number of entertainers have been using their celebrity to push for more effective gun control legislation in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

More information can be found at Demand a Plan’s website.

Kristen Bell Speaks Out On Behalf Of “Mercy For Animals”

posted on Aug 23 · by Jennifer · No Comments · Charity, News

Hollywood stars are squealing mad over Walmart’s treatment of pigs after an undercover investigation exposed rampant cruelty to animals at a factory farm supplying pork to the retail giant. In a letter fired off today to Walmart’s CEO Mike Duke, at the behest of the animal protection organization Mercy For Animals, Ryan Gosling, Kristen Bell, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Deschanel, Tom Morello, Kim Basinger, David Boreanaz, Ed Begley Jr., John Francis Daley, James Cromwell, Steve-O, and Loretta Swit wrote: “We implore you to help end the needless suffering of these animals by ending the sale of pork from producers who confine pigs in cages so small they can’t even turn around for nearly their entire lives.”

The appeal comes after hidden-camera video, shot at a Christensen Farms facility in Minnesota by an investigator with Mercy For Animals, revealed unconscionable cruelty. The footage shows pregnant pigs locked in tiny, filthy crates so small they couldn’t turn around, walk, or lie down comfortably, pigs suffering from bloody open wounds, and workers castrating and cutting off the tails of conscious piglets without painkillers and bashing in the skulls of sick piglets by slamming them headfirst into the concrete.

The letter points out:

“While Walmart tells its customers they can ‘Save Money, Live Better,’ the pork sold in your stores comes from pigs whose lives couldn’t possibly be any worse. As world-renowned animal behaviorist Dr. Jonathan Balcombe puts it: ‘Gestation crates are unremitting hell on earth.’

Inside tiny gestation crates barely larger than their own bodies, these intelligent and social animals never get to walk, run, root in the soil, see the sun, breathe fresh air, or do nearly anything that comes naturally to them. Driven mad from boredom and stress, these poor animals have nothing to do, hour after hour, day after day, but bite the bars of their cages.

While all of the abuses shown in the video at WalmartCruelty.com are unconscionable, perhaps the worst form of torture forced on these innocent animals is the use of gestation crates. As you should know, gestation crates are considered so cruel that leading animal welfare experts condemn them, nine US states and the entire European Union have banned them, and nearly all of Walmart’s competitors, including Costco, Safeway, Kroger, and Kmart, have started demanding their pork suppliers do away with them.”

The letter concludes:

“It’s time for Walmart to quit dragging its feet and help put an end to one of the cruelest factory farming practices. As the largest retailer in the world, Walmart has the power — and the ethical responsibility — to ensure that the pork sold in its stores is not the product of egregious animal abuse.”

Women’s Health announced today the launch of RUN 10 FEED 10, a new signature national marketing platform created in partnership with the FEED Foundation to motivate the brand’s nearly 13 million readers and consumers nationwide to help fight domestic hunger through a unique running event series. This fall, Americans who register to run a 10K race in one of 11 markets with Women’s Health will instantly provide 10 meals for people in need within their community. In collaboration with the FEED Foundation, an organization founded by philanthropist and social entrepreneur Lauren Bush Lauren, Women’s Health is launching a new way for runners to make a difference.

“When Women’s Health saw the growth in the philanthropic fitness trend, we knew we could make a difference and inspire action with a platform that would bring marketers and consumers together in an innovative way,” said Laura Frerer-Schmidt, publisher of Women’s Health. “RUN 10 FEED 10 is a platform that redefines magazine events in this industry and is rooted in action: The more people who run with us, the more meals will be provided to help fight domestic hunger. We’re proud that Unilever signed on as our presenting sponsor to join our fight to help the 49 million Americans who go hungry every day.”

The flagship 10K event, one of 11 nationwide events in the series, will be held in New York City on Sunday, September 23, 2012, starting and ending at Pier 84 at Hudson River Park. Social media is a critical part of RUN 10 FEED 10—as participants cross the finish line, social posts about the cause and their donation of 10 meals will appear on their Facebook and Twitter pages, generating viral awareness of the initiative across the country. With a strong social media following—Women’s Health has more than 1.3 million followers across its social media outlets—the event will engage readers socially as well as in a live format.

The initiative has garnered tremendous pro bono support from the entertainment community. Celebrity talent, including Elizabeth Banks, Kristen Bell, Joel McHale, Kerry Washington, Allison Williams, and Leelee Sobieski, appear in a national PSA to raise awareness and encourage consumer participation. Kristen Bell Raises Money For Special Needs Pets

posted on Jul 30 · by Jennifer · No Comments · Charity, News

Kristen Bell, who credits her love of dogs for the reason she has been a vegetarian since the age of 11, has launched a new project to benefit the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the organization’s efforts to take care of rescued animals with special needs.

Bell is dedicating the project to her Labrador named Sadie who was recovered from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. The actress explains that when she first met Sadie, the 11-year-old pooch was in bad shape with missing teeth and in need of surgery. Bell writes, “What I loved so much about Sadie was that – through it all – the pain, the loss she’d just experienced, the uncertainty of what was next, she was just this total loveball. I saw that all this dog needed was a place to hang her hat. And I was going to give it to her.”

The 30-year-old is using actor Edward Norton’s Crowdrise—a social networking and crowdsourcing platform—to raise the funds for HSUS. The money raised will be earmarked for special needs pets at HSUS shelter partners.
